Bryce Harper
Bryce Harper DTD with wrist issue
Fri, Jun 6, 2025, 3:42 PM
Manager Rob Thomson said Friday that Harper is day-to-day with soreness in his right wrist, Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. Harper is out of Friday's lineup.
Analysis: Harper has been playing through a nagging wrist injury and will get Friday off to rest and recover. The first baseman also missed time last week after being hit by a pitch in the elbow. In his place, Alec Bohm will bat third and play first base.
J.T. Realmuto
J.T. Realmuto Back in action Friday
Fri, Jun 6, 2025, 3:37 PM
Realmuto (groin) will bat fifth and catch Friday against Pittsburgh, Paul Casella of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Realmuto took a foul tip to the groin area Wednesday and was held out of Thursday's contest due to the issue. However, he's back in the lineup for Friday's series opener against the Pirates. Realmuto is 4-for-26 in his last eight appearances.
Seth Johnson
Seth Johnson Sent back down
Fri, Jun 6, 2025, 2:24 PM
The Phillies optioned Johnson to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Friday.
Analysis: Johnson made his 2025 MLB debut Thursday, allowing one run over two innings. With the Phillies having a bullpen game Friday against Pittsburgh, they'll add a fresh arm to the bullpen in Alan Rangel. Johnson has a 4.91 ERA over 33 innings with Lehigh Valley this season.
Jose Rodriguez
Jose Rodriguez Re-ups with Phillies
Fri, Jun 6, 2025, 12:38 PM
Rodriguez signed a minor-league contract with Philadelphia on Friday, Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
Analysis: Rodriguez was reinstated from the ineligible list Thursday after serving a one-year suspension for violating MLB's gambling policy, and after being non-tendered, he's back in the Phillies organization. Rodriguez spent his entire 2024 season at Double-A Reading, but he spent some time at Triple-A in 2023 while with the White Sox. The 24-year-old slashed .265/.329/.422 in 164 plate appearances last season.
Bryson Stott
Bryson Stott Slump deepens in blowout loss
Thu, Jun 5, 2025, 8:03 PM
Stott went 0-for-4 in Thursday's 9-1 loss to the Blue Jays.
Analysis: It's becoming a deep slump for Stott, who struck out multiple times Thursday for the first time since May 10. Across his last 29 games (112 at-bats), the speedy middle infielder is hitting just .196 with two home runs, two doubles, 11 RBI and 13 runs scored. The lefty-hitting Stott's playing time doesn't appear to be in any kind of immediate danger -- backup second baseman Edmundo Sosa has a .562 OPS versus righties in 2025 -- but it wouldn't be surprising if the Phillies considered moving him down the lineup until he overcomes his struggles.
Joe Ross
Joe Ross Leading off bullpen game
Thu, Jun 5, 2025, 6:34 PM
Ross will start Friday's game against the Pirates, Lochlahn March of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
Analysis: Ross has pitched exclusively out of the bullpen this season but has gotten more than three outs in nine of his 21 appearances. He is expected to pitch around two innings and will lead off a bullpen game for the Phillies. Taijuan Walker would have been a candidate to also chip in multiple innings, but he pitched one frame in Thursday's loss to Toronto so he may no longerbe available.
Jesus Luzardo
Jesus Luzardo Crushed again in loss
Thu, Jun 5, 2025, 5:25 PM
Luzardo (5-2) took the loss against the Blue Jays on Thursday, allowing eight runs on nine hits and two walks with two strikeouts over 2.1 innings
Analysis: Luzardo surrendered eight runs across the second and third innings in his shortest outing of the season. After yielding just 16 earned runs through his first 11 starts, he's now been tagged for 20 over his past two. The southpaw's velocity remained in line with his season averages, suggesting a loss of command rather than stuff at the moment. He now carries a 4.46 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 83:34 K:BB across 72.2 innings and lines up for a difficult matchup with the Cubs next week.
Zack Wheeler
Zack Wheeler Set to rejoin rotation next week
Thu, Jun 5, 2025, 12:30 PM
The Phillies expect Wheeler (personal) to make his return to the rotation next week, likely during the team's three-game home series versus the Cubs that begins Monday, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Wheeler was initially lined up to make his 13th start of the season this past Tuesday in Toronto, but he was excused from making the trip to Canada due the forthcoming birth of his child. The Phillies officially placed Wheeler on the paternity list Wednesday, and though he'll have to be activated Saturday after missing the maximum three games, the right-hander won't be asked to pitch during this weekend's series in Pittsburgh. To accommodate for Wheeler's absence from the pitching schedule, the Phillies will go with a bullpen game Friday, while Ranger Suarez and Cristopher Sanchez start the final two contests of the series versus the Pirates.
Eiberson Castellano
Eiberson Castellano Shut down with injury again
Thu, Jun 5, 2025, 11:35 AM
Double-A Reading placed Castellano on its 7-day injured list Saturday due to an undisclosed injury.
Analysis: After about a three-week stay on the shelf due to another unspecified injury, Castellano was activated from Reading's IL last Thursday. He made a relief appearance in a 5-4 loss to Erie that same day and gave up three earned runs on two hits and two walks over one inning. It's unclear if Castellano aggravated the previous injury or suffered a new one in that relief appearance, but Reading moved quickly to deactivate the 24-year-old righty once again. Castellano is without a clear timeline to return to action.
J.T. Realmuto
J.T. Realmuto Absent from lineup
Thu, Jun 5, 2025, 11:18 AM
Realmuto (groin) is not in the lineup for Thursday's game in Toronto.
Analysis: Realmuto's absence for Thursday's matinee game comes as little surprise after he departed Wednesday's 2-1 loss following a foul tip to the groin area. Per Lochlahn March of The Philadelphia Inquirer, Realmuto downplayed the groin issue Thursday and said he's hopeful that he'll have to miss only one start, though he acknowledged he hasn't tried to swing a bat since suffering the injury and will likely be available for the series finale in Toronto only in an emergency situation. Rafael Marchan will start at catcher and bat ninth for the Phillies on Thursday.
Nick Castellanos
Nick Castellanos Slugs sixth long ball in loss
Wed, Jun 4, 2025, 10:00 PM
Castellanos went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 2-1 loss to Toronto.
Analysis: It was the sixth long ball of the season for Castellanos, who has been hitting for some more power of late. Over his last 10 outings, the veteran slugger is batting .286 (10-for-35) with two homers, two doubles and four RBI to go with four runs scored and one stolen base. As long as Castellanos is regularly hitting fourth or fifth in Philadelphia's lineup, he should see plenty of RBI opportunities going forward.
Jordan Romano
Jordan Romano Gives up walk-off single
Wed, Jun 4, 2025, 9:51 PM
Romano (1-2) was charged with the loss in Wednesday's 2-1 defeat to Toronto, allowing one run on two hits with one strikeout in the ninth inning.
Analysis: Romano was tasked with keeping the game tied at 1-1 in the ninth inning, but he gave up a walk-off single to Alejandro Kirk. The hard-throwing right-hander has been shaky since retaking the closer's job, recording a 7.11 ERA, 1.89 WHIP and 13:5 K:BB over his last 6.1 innings. Romano has gone 4-for-4 on save chances during this span, so he figures to remain Philadelphia's preferred ninth-inning weapon while leaving the door open for the likes of Orion Kerkering and Matt Strahm if his struggles continue.
Mick Abel
Mick Abel Impresses once again Wednesday
Wed, Jun 4, 2025, 8:55 PM
Abel didn't factor into the decision Wednesday against the Blue Jays after giving up one run on three hits and no walks in 5.1 innings. He struck out two.
Analysis: Although Abel wasn't nearly as dominant as he was in his first start, when he fanned nine in six shutout innings, he was still highly effective. The rookie right-hander did generate just five whiffs, but he's now surrendered only one run while producing a promising 11:0 K:BB over the first 11.1 innings of his major-league career. With Aaron Nola (ankle) still yet to go on a minor-league rehab assignment, Abel's next turn in Philadelphia's rotation is tentatively slated for early next week against a Pirates club with a miserable .638 OPS over 31 games since the start of May.
J.T. Realmuto
J.T. Realmuto Exits early Wednesday
Wed, Jun 4, 2025, 8:34 PM
Realmuto was removed from Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays with a groin injury, Jordan Horrobin of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: A foul tip hit Realmuto below the belt during the ninth inning of Wednesday's contest, forcing him to leave the game early alongside a trainer. His status for the Phillies' next few games remains unknown, though any missed time for the 34-year-old would result in Rafael Marchan picking up reps behind the dish.
Aaron Nola
Aaron Nola Managing side stiffness
Wed, Jun 4, 2025, 4:18 PM
Manager Rob Thomson said Wednesday that Nola (ankle) will be shut down from throwing for a couple days due to right side stiffness, Jordan Horrobin of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Nola was slated to throw another bullpen session Thursday as the next step in his recovery from a sprained right ankle, but the Phillies will instead push his next mound session back a few days. Thomson described the right-hander's side injury as "very mild," so it shouldn't impact his return timeline too much.
Edmundo Sosa
Edmundo Sosa Moves back to reserve role
Wed, Jun 4, 2025, 3:43 PM
Sosa is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays.
Analysis: Sosa made five straight starts to close out last week, but he's moved back into a reserve role for the first two games of the Phillies' series in Toronto with Bryce Harper returning to the lineup Tuesday after missing time due to a bruised elbow. With Philadelphia back to full strength, Sosa is expected to see most of his starting opportunities against left-handed pitching moving forward as a replacement at second base for Bryson Stott.
Mick Abel
Mick Abel Called up for start
Wed, Jun 4, 2025, 1:42 PM
The Phillies recalled Abel from Triple-A Lehigh Valley ahead of his scheduled start Wednesday in Toronto.
Analysis: Zack Wheeler (personal) was placed on the paternity list in a corresponding move, but Abel will be taking over the rotation spot that had previously been occupied by Taijuan Walker, who has been moved to a relief role. Walker had been filling in for Aaron Nola (ankle), who has resumed throwing off a mound and should eventually take the rotation spot back from Abel once he's activated from the 15-day injured list. Nola will likely need to make a rehab start in the minors before being reinstated, so Abel should be in good position to get at least two turns through the rotation while he's up with the big club. The 23-year-old righty was highly impressive in his MLB debut back on May 18 against the Pirates, covering six shutout innings and scattering five hits while striking out nine batters.
Zack Wheeler
Zack Wheeler Goes on paternity list
Wed, Jun 4, 2025, 1:37 PM
The Phillies placed Wheeler (personal) on the paternity list Wednesday.
Analysis: Wheeler didn't travel to Toronto for the three-game series versus the Blue Jays this week while awaiting the birth of his child, but the Phillies waited until Wednesday before officially deactivating him. In a corresponding move, the Phillies recalled right-hander Mick Abel from Triple-A Lehigh Valley, and he'll start Wednesday's game. Per MLB rules, Wheeler will have to miss between one and three games while on the paternity list, so the expectation is that he'll be activated to make a start at some point during this weekend's series in Pittsburgh.
Bryce Harper
Bryce Harper Homers in return
Wed, Jun 4, 2025, 7:10 AM
Harper went 1-for-3 with a solo homer, two walks and two runs scored in Tuesday's win over the Blue Jays.
Analysis: Harper took Bowden Francis deep in his first at-bat since being hit in the elbow by a fastball May 27. He also worked multiple walks in a game for the first time since April 26. His plate discipline has been superb, as he owns a 6:3 BB:K over his last 14 games. For the year, Harper's hitting .268/.380/.463 with nine homers, 34 RBI, 32 runs, eight steals and a 35:42 BB:K in 245 plate appearances.
Trea Turner
Trea Turner Homers twice Tuesday
Wed, Jun 4, 2025, 7:01 AM
Turner went 3-for-5 with two homers and three RBI in Tuesday's win over the Blue Jays.
Analysis: Turner kicked off a six-run first inning with a two-run homer off Bowden Francis and later added some insurance with a solo blast in the eighth. This was his eighth game this season with at least three hits and his first with multiple homers. In 14 games since May 19, Turner is hitting .339/.394/.678 with five homers, 13 RBI, 12 runs, six steals and a 5:9 BB:K.
